LONGBOAT KEY REAL ESTATE’S HISTORY AT A GLANCE
- Longboat Key was originally scouted by Juan de Añasco, the first known European to explore the key, and a scout of Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto.
- Land on the island was first claimed by Colin and Rowlin Witt, who claimed seven acres in the northern section of the island in 1882. Others would continue to claim land on the key during the late 1800s, although none of them remained permanent residents.
- The first known residents of Longboat Key were Thomas Mann and his family, who held around 144 acres of land in 1891. Their home was located at the north end of the key.
- In 1923, entrepreneur and circus magnate John Ringling bought a substantial amount of land on Longboat Key. Three years later, Ringling entered a contract to develop a Ritz-Carlton hotel on the southern portion of the island. However, due to other financial interests and with the Florida land boom starting to slow down, construction of the hotel was stopped in November 1926. It was later torn down in 1962 following Arvida’s purchase of the land.
- In 1935, former Chicago-based insurance agent Gordon Whitney began purchasing properties on Longboat Key to build cottages as part of a resort on the northern end of the island. The area was eventually named “Whitney Beach.”
- The town of Longboat Key was officially incorporated on November 14, 1955.
